GREEN SPOT N°5 Candle Café- Meet New York’s 1st certified green restaurant!

Candle Café is more than a vegetarian / vegan restaurant. It is one of THE green restaurants in New York as it is commited since 1984 to promote a green lifestyle with its vegetarian menus, homemade soups, sandwiches, salads and entrees.
But this café would not be here today if the two pioneers and partners Bart and Joy would not have played in the lottery on Friday the 13th, 1993 and won over $50.000!
This accelerated things and a remarkable green success story started. Candle Cafe became the first certified green restaurant in New York and has since been rated as one of the best vegan/vegetarian restaurants in the city.
Running a sustainable set-up is not just a business model for them, it’s their passion. The eatery strives each day to minimise it’s carbon footprint for the benefit of the whole community.
Their mission is to bring to their guests “fresh food from farm to table”. For this they privilege a plant-based diet, local foods and support small organic farms. No genetically modified foods have ever been in this green kitchen.
But they also go the extra mile with energy efficient electrical and cooking equipment. They also pay attention at the interior air quality using eco-friendly paints and fabrics and non-toxic eco-friendly cleaning products. They recycle and compost what ever they can. The restaurant also cooperates with other sustainable and ethical groups like PETA for initiatives.
This green restaurant shows ‘green’ tag doesn’t merely imply a vegan/ organic menu but making sustainability a guiding principle for all areas impacting business. And it’s is not a burden for business, but the essential part of this long term success story.
